So the other day I told you one my goals for this year (2012 Goals and Resolutions) is:
"Developing my own style: I had this as a goal last year sort of and did make some progress. I decided that I wanted to re-ignite my love of fashion and make-up. I read some books, and lots of magazines, I bought my first ever pair of converse, my hair became progressively redder as the year went on, I improved my sewing skills and made a few items of clothing for myself. I want to build on this in 2012. I've been amassing sewing patterns/books and fabrics. They need making. I'm going to have a mega clear-out and re-assessing of what's in my closet. I'm not going to buy cheap replacements, but save up and invest in somethings I'd normally say I couldn't afford because the children came first etc. I'm going to have some fun!"
Well probably in a moment of madness over Christmas, I signed up to be a contributor to the Sew Weekly Challenge. I have to admit I didn't think I'd get accepted as I suspected the number of applicants would be huge (and that most would have tons more experience as seamstresses AND as bloggers).
But yesterday I got an email from Mena, the creator of the whole Sew Weekly experience and community asking me as a first challenge to set up an introductory page about myself with a pic of me in my favourite creation of 2011.
Don't get too excited, supposedly there are about 250 of us ;)
The difficulty was finding a photo, of me, wearing something I've made.
I did quite a few re-creatings of dresses I'd bought in the sales or at Goodwill stores (charity shops) last year and I also finished making some dresses:
But I didn't have any photos of me wearing them :(
The only photo of me wearing a creation I'd made is the one you'll find on my introduction page over on Sew Weekly:
Yep, it's the dress I made in a day out of a flannelette sheet I'd picked up at my local Goodwill that had flamingos, airstream caravans and snow on it (it was for a tiki meets Seattle party....the idea was to mix the kitsch tropical with the weather of the West coast of Washington state). And yes, those are two Starbucks lids glued to it.....well, Starbucks is from Seattle isn't it.....and they'd keep my extremities warm in the cold ;)
I've already had a fabulous comment on my introductory page:
"Great writing. Dress maybe not that great but hey, perfectly accessorized with that chicken hat. I love you already. Will make sure to follow your posts".
Haha, job done, I've made someone smile. (If you'd like to leave some well wishes in the comments on my page to spur me along on this exciting/terrifying challenge please feel free! Wink wink!)
Well anyway, will I be able to keep up the pace of making 52 outfits in 2012.....? It's certainly the makeover my wardrobe needs and will definitely help me develop my own style!
You can see mine and possibly hundreds of other contributors introductions and creations by checking out Sew Weekly each week, or if you like what you see, you can subscribe to one of more of the feeds to have posts sent directly to an RSS reader (I love Feeddler, a free or upgrade pro app for iphones, ipads and PCs that takes subscriptions from Google Reader....and possibly other readers).
Each week Mena will choose 5 contributors creations to feature out of the hundreds of us (if you want this only subscribe to the Core Sew Weekly Feed or if you're a real avid reader/flicker through pretty photos then I'll be in amongst the Contributor Creations Feed....though I'm hoping against hope that one week I might get selected for a feature spot. Fingers crossed.
Anyway, must get on.....the contributors have been told the 1st three week's theme/challenges so with only now until midnight Monday (PST) I have to sew an outfit, take pretty/creative photos of me in it and write about it......wish me luck. Can't tell you what the theme is yet, but I'll try to make something worth looking at and that.....develops my style! :)
