So anyway, Bowie.
Style Icon Extraordinaire. Fashion God. And his music's not bad either ;)

..which is gradually filling up with some fantastic varied sewing prompts)
A few of us on Sew Weekly started talking about making some of Bowie's outfits through the decades back last August when the weekly challenge was 'inspired by an artist or album cover'. Mind you, Kazz refashioned a jacket inspired by Bowie's Fashion back in March 2012! She's so ahead of the game.
The general consensus seemed to be that we couldn't do Bowie justice with just one week to sew something.
I nearly had a go near the end of the year.....but neshed out and did Annie Lennox's dress from when she performed WITH Bowie in 1992:
But I knew I still wanted to do a proper Bowie inspired outfit....outfits, and other sewists kept saying they would like to, too.
So in my final Sew Weekly post of 2012 I promised:
AND THEN.....whilst I'd been looking for an appropriate date for the Bowie Sew Along, some sort of anniversary of one of his albums coming out or perhaps one of his movies with a significant number of years since release.....on January 8th the man himself not only announced he'd be releasing his first studio album for 10 years this March 12th, but released a brand new single, Where Are We Now?
AND, and, and (she says jumping up and down in excitement), on the same day I discovered the fabulous Victoria and Albert Museum in London is going to be hosting a special exhibition from March 23rd until 28th July called "David Bowie Is" where they've been given:
"unprecedented access to the David Bowie Archive to curate the first international retrospective of the extraordinary career of David Bowie. David Bowie is will feature more than 300 objects that include handwritten lyrics, original costumes, fashion, photography, film, music videos, set designs and Bowie's own instruments".
So basically the world is going to be awash with all things Bowie this March.....so it would be rude not to join in, don't you think?!
Mark you diaries now, the Bowie Sew Along will be for the whole of March 2013. Whether you start sewing something before then or just choose to sew during the month is totally up to you. I'll be posting Bowie inspiration throughout the month and showcasing your creations and other stuff I've found around the internet.
Whether you want to make a full on Rite of Spring by Kansai Yamamoto in 1973.....

...........or simply paint a lightning bolt with fabric paint on a t-shirt.....or anything inspired by anything Bowie inbetween.....you'd be more than welcome to join us. If you fancy making yourself a natty suit whilst listening to Bowie songs, that's fine too!
Here's some inspiration reminders:
If you're a Pinterest fan, then why not follow my Bowie fashion inspiration board, as it will be growing and growing in the next month........and I'll be back nearer the end of February with more details.
