Today's an important day. Not only is it only just two weeks now until the 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who, The Day of The Doctor BUT....
....4 years ago today the Devynes moved to the USA with just 8 suitcases (though we had a container of extra stuff arriving a month later) and a massive thirst for adventure.
You can read more about our first few days and weeks here and here, and here. It wasn't landing on Ellis Island with $10 in our pockets rough, but it was rough for quite a few months, and things we never expected.
BUT....I would go through it all again to be hand-in-hand with Mr D on this big adventure called life. We've had fun.
This includes four years of Arizona weather (yes, I'm a Brit, of course the first thing I mention is the weather), 6 months a year it being over 100 degrees F (38C) and peaking at around 115-116....and yet this being Arizona, of course you can buy snowballs for snowball fights in the sun (thanks Paula!) And we've lived through the annual monsoons, dust storms and occasional haboob...
We've immersed ourselves in American culture, especially the more dubious and quirky elements, joined in celebration days and holidays, gone to barn dances, watched their sports from baseball to ostrich racing...
We've done road trips to Las Vegas (several times, we love it), San Diego, Los Angeles, Seattle, Area 51 (allegedly), Death Valley, the Grand Canyon, Hollywood, the London Bridge moved from London to Arizona, Tombstone, the Hoover Dam, New York and many, many other places....there are sooo many places to visit IT'S SO BIG, I think it's going to take us the rest our lives to see even half of the fascinating places.
And of course, if we're talking Doctor Who (which I should be), we've done THE Doctor Who Road Trip to the filming locations of 'The Impossible Astronaut' and 'Day of the Moon':
(And if you want to see the detailed posts on all three parts of the Impossible Astronaut and Day of the Moon filming locations and directions/co-ordinates to get there check out my Doctor Who road trip posts here).
I can't believe it's been a whole 4 years. Tonight we shall be making our annual trip to an Applebees restaurant because that's what we did the day after landing in Phoenix.
We specifically chose an Applebees (think Little Chef if you're British) because we wanted to see if we could be thrown out like Ricky Bobby's dad in Talladega Nights (most of our knowledge of the USA came from movies at that point). This will be our fourth attempt at being thrown out. It won't work again I'm sure, we're far too polite and apologetic being Brits. Remember if you ain't first you're last....and here's us standing next to the worst Will Ferrell/Ricky Bobby wax work ever in Hollywood, shake 'n bake baby...
But anyway, four years, and we'd just like to celebrate that, so here's a fitting Doctor Who compilation for the Doctor Who Sew Along to Party in the USA.....and tell me you don't want to wave your hands in the air (like you just don't care) like the Doctor after seeing this. Some fun editing by thinktwice1997.
Just two weeks to go (till the anniversary.....you've got an extra week sewing after that). *excited face* *waves her hands in the air*
Ps. BBC America say there's going be a trailer for The Day of the Doctor today (it's showing in the UK on BBC One in UK just before Atlantis at 8pm GMT). HOW EXCITING!
